Move Metrics Soil Movement Distances Map
This map shows the distance each area of cut needs to travel to reach its fill area destination. The opposite is also true, ie., each area of fill is colored according to how far soil must travel to reach it.
This map is useful for understanding those areas of the field that will require the longest haul distances.
It should be used in conjunction with the Soil Movement Map to understand which how the cuts and fills are related to each other.
This map can aid placement of haul roads by showing the position and size of cuts and fills that are widely dispersed. It may also be helpful in determining if fill areas are better served by borrowing dirt from outside the field, and cut areas more efficiently handled by stockpiling the excavated soil rather than hauling it long distances.
Areas on the map that have little or no color may indicate that only grading or brushing passes are required.
When the distances are shaded to display a type of 3D relief map, the resultant valleys and ridges can be useful for indicating places where soil is either being brought together from two opposite locations, or removed in opposite directions.
This can be helpful for delineating regions that balance locally (as shown below).
